Clout Numbers vs. Real Numbers: What Your Build Actually Makes on the Dyno

Scroll through any car community on Instagram for about four minutes and you'll find it: a video of an engine bay, a list of mods in the caption, and a horsepower figure that makes your eyebrows move. Four hundred and sixty wheel horsepower from a stock bottom end with a bolt-on turbo kit and a street tune. Claimed. Posted. Liked forty thousand times.
The dyno sheet is there — technically — in the corner of one frame, visible for approximately half a second before the slow-motion engine start footage takes over.
Here's what that number probably actually is: made up. Or at minimum, aspirationally rounded.
This isn't a callout post. It's a conversation the community needs to have honestly, because the gap between what people claim online and what their cars actually produce has gotten wide enough to drive a truck through.
Why Builders Exaggerate (It's More Complicated Than You Think)
The easy take is that people lie for clout. That's true sometimes. But the full picture is messier and more interesting.
Some builders genuinely don't know their real numbers. They're working off manufacturer estimates, parts listings that promise gains, or the word of a tuner who was being optimistic. They post a number they believe is accurate because they've never actually strapped their car to a dyno and watched the graph.
Others are doing the math wrong — or using math that's technically valid but practically misleading. Crank horsepower versus wheel horsepower is the classic example. A manufacturer rates an engine at 400 horsepower at the crank. By the time that power travels through the transmission, driveshaft, and differential, you're losing 15 to 20 percent to drivetrain friction. So a car that makes 400 crank horsepower might post 330 to 340 at the wheels on a dyno. When someone claims "400 horsepower" without specifying which measurement, they're letting you fill in the blanks.
And then yes, some people just add 50 to the real number because the real number felt embarrassing.
The Dyno Isn't the Final Word Either
Before we crown the dyno as the ultimate truth machine, it's worth knowing that dyno numbers have their own complications.
Different dynos produce different results. A Mustang dyno and a Dynojet will read the same car differently — sometimes by 20 to 30 horsepower — because they use different correction factors and measure different things. Ambient temperature, humidity, altitude, and even tire pressure affect the reading. A car that makes 340 wheel horsepower on a cool morning in Denver might show 325 on a hot afternoon in Phoenix.
This is why "dyno pulls" without context are almost as slippery as Instagram claims. A legitimate dyno sheet shows the date, the conditions, the correction factor used, and ideally multiple pulls to show consistency. If someone's sheet just shows one number with no supporting data, treat it accordingly.
That said — an actual dyno run is still infinitely more honest than a caption.
How to Spot the BS in the Wild
You don't have to be an engineer to read the signals. Here's what to look for when a build claim doesn't feel right.
The mods don't add up to the number. A naturally aspirated engine with bolt-on intake, exhaust, and a tune does not make 150 horsepower more than stock. Gains from bolt-ons on an N/A car are real but modest — typically 10 to 25 horsepower total, depending on the platform. If the claimed gains are dramatically higher than what the parts are physically capable of delivering, the number is inflated.
The dyno sheet is decorative. If the sheet appears in a video but is never shown clearly, never discussed, and never uploaded separately, it's set dressing. A builder who's genuinely proud of a real number wants you to read it.
The horsepower figure is suspiciously round. Real dyno pulls produce numbers like 347.6 or 412.8. Numbers like 400, 450, or 500 on the nose are almost always aspirational.
They haven't mentioned parasitic loss. Anyone who's actually been through a real tune will talk about drivetrain loss like it's second nature. If someone is quoting a big number without acknowledging the difference between crank and wheel, they might not have actually been through the process.
What Your Build Probably Actually Makes
Let's get honest about common platform expectations, because the community deserves a reality check.
A bolt-on LS-swapped build that "should" make 500 horsepower based on the parts list will frequently dyno in the 420 to 460 range — if the tune is dialed in, if the fuel system is keeping up, and if the dyno conditions are reasonable. That's still a monster. It's also not 500.
A turbocharged four-cylinder with a "stage 2" kit that claims 350 wheel horsepower is probably making 290 to 320 on a good day with a proper tune. Still fast. Still impressive. Just not what the sticker says.
The builds that genuinely hit their advertised numbers are the ones where the owner has receipts — real dyno sheets, real tuner logs, real supporting modifications that justify the claim. Those builders usually aren't the loudest in the comments, either.
How to Evaluate Your Own Build Honestly
The most useful thing you can do for your own build is stop caring what it looks like on paper and start caring what it feels like in practice — and then verify the feeling with data.
Get a real dyno pull. Yes, it costs money. Yes, it might produce a number that's lower than you hoped. Do it anyway. You'll know exactly what you're working with, you'll have a baseline for future modifications, and you'll be able to tune intelligently instead of guessing.
Log your data. An OBD-II scanner and a free logging app will tell you things about your engine's behavior that no Instagram post ever will. Knock events, fuel trims, boost pressure consistency — these numbers are the real story of how your build is performing.
Be honest with your community. The builders who post their actual dyno numbers — even when they're lower than expected — get more respect in the long run than the ones who inflate their claims and get caught. Real talk builds real credibility.
Flash the Real Numbers or Don't Flash Them at All
The whole point of showing off a build is sharing something genuine. Something you actually built, actually tuned, and actually drove. The car culture that makes this community worth being part of is built on real stories — not fabricated specs designed to manufacture a reputation.
Your build doesn't have to make 500 horsepower to be worth talking about. It just has to be yours, built honestly, with numbers you can actually stand behind.
