How to Read a Car Show Like a Pro: The Red Flags Hiding in Plain Sight

Car shows are one of the best things about being part of this community. You get to walk through rows of builds that represent hundreds — sometimes thousands — of hours of work, talk to the people who actually turned the wrenches, and pick up ideas you'd never find scrolling a forum at midnight. It's one of the purest expressions of what car culture actually is.
But let's be real with each other for a second: not everything at a car show deserves the attention it's getting.
Some builds are legitimately impressive. Others are expensive mistakes wearing a good set of wheels and a fresh detail. And a surprising number fall somewhere in the middle — genuine effort undermined by a few bad decisions that'll cause real problems the second that car leaves the show field and hits actual roads.
Knowing how to tell the difference isn't about being a hater. It's about having the eye. And if you're serious about this hobby — whether you're building your own car, thinking about buying someone else's work, or just trying to level up your appreciation for what quality actually looks like — developing that eye is worth your time.
The Wheel Fitment Test Nobody Talks About Loudly Enough
Start at the wheels. Always start at the wheels.
Fitment is one of the most visually obvious things on a modified car, and it's also one of the most commonly botched. The right wheel setup fills the fender well cleanly, sits flush or with a controlled amount of poke, and maintains consistent gap all the way around the arch. When it's done right, it looks like the car was born that way.
When it's wrong, you'll know immediately. Look for:
- Uneven gap around the fender — more space at the front of the arch than the rear (or vice versa) usually means the wheel offset is wrong for the car's geometry.
- Rubbing marks on the inner fender liner — crouch down and look. Scrub marks or cracked plastic are a confession that the fitment is too aggressive for the suspension setup.
- Camber that exists purely for aesthetics — a little negative camber can be functional, especially on a dedicated track car. Camber so extreme the tire is making contact on its inner edge while the outer half is useless? That's a tire bill and a handling problem waiting to happen.
- Spacers doing heavy lifting — spacers have legitimate uses, but when a car is running significant spacers to make undersized wheels look like they fit, that's a shortcut. Check for exposed spacer hardware peeking out behind the spoke.
Paint That Tells the Truth
A fresh detail can make almost any paint look good from ten feet away. Get closer.
Quality paintwork has depth to it — you can almost see into it. The surface is consistent, the color doesn't shift unevenly between panels, and the clear coat has a smoothness that doesn't require squinting to appreciate. Good body shops also obsess over panel gaps. Consistent, tight gaps between the hood and fenders, doors that sit flush with the body, trunk lids that don't sit proud on one side — these details are the signature of real craftsmanship.
Red flags to watch for:
- Orange peel texture — that bumpy, uneven texture that looks like the skin of an orange. Some is normal on factory paint, but on a custom respray that's supposedly show quality, heavy orange peel means the prep or the application was rushed.
- Color mismatch at panel edges — lean in close and look at where the hood meets the fender. If the color shifts even slightly, panels were painted separately and the match wasn't perfect.
- Runs or sags in the clear coat — these show up as drips or heavy areas in the finish, usually near edges. They're a sign the painter was working too fast or the conditions weren't right.
- Overspray on rubber trim — check around window seals, door handles, and under the hood. Overspray hiding in the gaps is a telltale sign of a budget job dressed up to look like more.
The LED Situation Is Getting Out of Hand
We need to talk about lights.
Lighting modifications have exploded in the last few years, and some of it is genuinely cool — properly aimed LED projectors that actually improve visibility, sequential turn signals on a clean Euro build, underglow that's tasteful and legal. There's a place for it.
But there's also a growing category of lighting choices that are bad for everyone else on the road and, frankly, look like they came out of a $30 Amazon kit. Here's what to watch for:
- Headlights aimed at the sky or directly into oncoming traffic — this isn't aesthetic, it's dangerous. Aftermarket LED conversions in reflector housings are notorious for this. If the beam pattern looks like a lighthouse, that car is blinding people on the street.
- Underglow so bright it's distracting — there's a difference between accent lighting and a strobe show. The latter isn't a build choice, it's a citation.
- Interior LED strips run with exposed wiring — look at the footwell. If the LED strips are held in place with double-sided tape and the wiring is just zip-tied to the factory harness without proper connectors, that's a fire hazard wearing a neon costume.
Under the Hood: Where the Truth Lives
The engine bay at a car show is where you separate the serious builders from the people who spent their budget on the exterior and called it done.
A quality engine bay doesn't have to be spotless — a car that actually gets driven will show some use. But it should be intentional. Wiring should be routed cleanly, hoses should be properly clamped and not cracking at the ends, and any modifications should look like they were engineered rather than improvised.
Things that should give you pause:
- Mismatched hose clamps — worm-drive clamps from the hardware store on a build with expensive intake components is a consistency problem that usually means the owner did some work and paid someone to do the rest.
- Wiring that disappears into a harness wrap and never comes out cleanly — wrapping wiring in loom or heat shrink is fine. Using it to hide a rats' nest of spliced connections is not.
- Intercooler or intake piping with visible boost leaks — look for oily residue around couplers and clamps. On a turbocharged car, boost leaks kill power and can cause tuning headaches that damage the engine over time.
- Coolant reservoir that's empty or has residue around the cap — a small thing, but a show car that's been properly maintained shouldn't have this.
The Walk-Away Test
After you've done your inspection, here's the final move: step back about 20 feet and look at the car as a whole. Does everything read as intentional? Does the wheel fitment match the suspension setup? Does the paint quality match the quality of the body kit? Does the engine bay match the exterior?
The best builds have coherence. Every decision feels like it was made with the same vision in mind, and the execution backs it up. When a build has that coherence — even if it's not the flashiest thing on the field — that's what real craftsmanship looks like.
And when it doesn't? That's not a reason to be dismissive. Building cars is hard, it costs real money, and everyone starts somewhere. But knowing the difference between a build that's genuinely sorted and one that's still a work in progress is exactly the kind of knowledge that makes you better at this hobby — whether you're building, buying, or just here for the love of it.
